Presidents Hichilema and Chapo Reinforce Zambia–Mozambique Partnership with New Trade and Border Agreement
President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia and President Daniel Francisco Chapo of Mozambique held Official Talks at State House in Lusaka, reaffirming the deep-rooted friendship and commitment to stronger cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
The high-level discussions focused on expanding collaboration in economic development, trade, energy, and regional integration, while emphasizing the shared goal of peace and security across the Southern African region.
A Relationship Anchored in History and Solidarity
President Hichilema underscored the longstanding historical and cultural bonds between Zambia and Mozambique, noting that their relationship dates back to the pre-independence era.
“Peace, security, and stability are the foundation for sustainable development,” President Hichilema stated, commending Mozambique’s progress in restoring peace in Cabo Delgado Province.
He reaffirmed Zambia’s unwavering support for Mozambique’s peace and security initiatives and expressed gratitude for Mozambique’s continued assistance in supplying electricity during Zambia’s periods of drought.
President Hichilema also thanked President Chapo for accepting his invitation to attend Zambia’s 61st Independence Day celebrations on October 24, describing the visit as a symbol of brotherhood, unity, and regional solidarity.
President Chapo Calls for Stronger Economic Cooperation
In his remarks, President Daniel Francisco Chapo expressed appreciation for Zambia’s historic role in supporting Mozambique during its liberation struggle. He emphasized the need to deepen economic and trade relations, calling for stronger collaboration in industrialisation, energy, and agriculture.
“We must build on our shared history by enhancing trade and industrial cooperation to achieve greater self-reliance,” President Chapo said.
His message aligned closely with both countries’ development agendas, focusing on regional value addition, job creation, and sustainable growth.
New Trade and Infrastructure Agreement Signed
The bilateral talks concluded with the signing of a landmark agreement to establish a One Stop Border Post (OSBP) at Chanida–Cassacatiza, a major step towards streamlining cross-border trade and boosting regional economic integration.
Once operational, the OSBP is expected to enhance efficiency in goods movement, reduce transit costs, and strengthen trade links between the two nations.
Looking Ahead: A Shared Vision for Regional Growth
President Chapo’s Working Visit to Zambia, from 22nd to 24th October 2025, at the invitation of President Hichilema, reinforces the growing partnership between Lusaka and Maputo.
The visit and resulting agreements reflect a shared vision — one rooted in mutual respect, economic cooperation, and sustainable regional development marking yet another milestone in the enduring Zambia–Mozambique friendship.
